UTAR Faculty of Science’s (FSC) Master of Science student An Hongxuan won the Second Prize in the Poster Presentation (Student Category) at the 7th International Conference on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology 2024 (7th ICMBB 2024), held in conjunction with the 6th USIM International Health Conference (IHeC) 2024.
The conference took place from 26 to 27 June 2024 at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and was organised by the Malaysian Society of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MSMBB).
The competition featured a poster presentation in the student category, where participants were required to present their scientific posters. This year’s conference, themed ‘Transdisciplinary Synergy: Shaping a Sustainable Future for a Better World’, emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling global challenges.
An’s winning poster, titled “Biodegradation Potential of Halophilic Bacteria Nesterenkonia sp. CL21 Isolated from Mangrove Sediments” highlighted research on the biodegradation capabilities of halophilic bacteria. The study demonstrated the potential of Nesterenkonia sp. CL21 in degrading lignocellulosic materials under high salt conditions, offering new avenues for industrial biodegradation.
Reflecting on the competition, An shared, “I entered this competition to challenge myself and share my findings with field experts. Summarising my comprehensive research into an engaging poster was a significant challenge but provided valuable learning experiences. This recognition has greatly boosted my confidence and opened new doors for future research opportunities.”
He also acknowledged the key role UTAR played in this achievement. “The supportive environment at UTAR, coupled with the guidance from my experienced supervisors, Dr Lam Ming Quan, Dr Ee Kah Yaw, and Assoc Prof Dr Chong Chun Shiong from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia as well as the collaborative research culture, significantly contributed to the quality of my work.”
The research not only showcased innovative approaches to biodegradation but also aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation. An’s work aims to promote environmental sustainability and contribute to pollution control and water treatment.
