Dr Leong with the ASEAN Green Award Grand Winner Honour

Dr Leong’s journey in championing sustainability began in 2019 when he launched an initiative aimed at promoting green living and sustainable practices in rural communities. By focusing on waste management, Dr Leong educated these communities on the importance of recycling, laying the groundwork for his broader advocacy to transform waste into wealth. His efforts extended to schools, where he collaborated with educators to teach students practical recycling methods and instil the values of sustainability.

In addition to his community initiatives, Dr Leong has been a strong advocate for integrating sustainability into education. As part of this mission, he co-organised the 1st Perak State Ecobot Competition in 2019, in partnership with the Technological Association Malaysia (TAM) and UTAR, encouraging young minds to innovate for a greener future.

Dr Leong’s pioneering research also contributes to sustainability, particularly in the areas of water and wastewater treatment. His focus on nanotechnology and its potential to harness sunlight as a sustainable energy source has resulted in the development of advanced nanomaterials capable of removing harmful pollutants such as pesticides, microplastics, endocrine-disrupting compounds, and pharmaceuticals. By collaborating with industry partners, Dr Leong has ensured that his research translates into practical, real-world applications that address pressing environmental challenges.

Reflecting on his achievements, Dr Leong expressed his gratitude, saying, “I was pleasantly surprised to receive the Country Winner Award and even more so to clinch the Grand Winner Award. It is a huge honour to be recognised with these prestigious accolades. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to UTAR, my collaborators, and industry partners for their unwavering support and belief in my vision.”
