Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science students Bong Qin Zhe, Ooi Jin Wei and Tan Yan Zhen, under the guidance of LKC FES Centre for Railway Infrastructure and Engineering Chairperson Assoc Prof Ir Dr Chua Kein Huat, have once again made their mark on the international stage by advancing to the semi-final stage of the prestigious IEEE BIG 2024 competition.

The students’ project, titled Earn Carbon Credit by Charging EV, impressed the judges and secured a spot in the semi-finals. Their innovative project addressed a critical issue in the EV industry by developing a system to accurately track and quantify the carbon footprint of electric vehicles.

IEEE BIG 2024, an annual international competition organised by IEEE ITS SB, was designed to encourage innovation and technological progress. This year’s event, hosted at the Institut Sains dan Teknologi Terpadu Nopember campus in Surabaya, Indonesia, took place from 12 to 17 November 2024 and included two sub-competitions, namely the Paper and Poster Competition (PPC) and the Business Case Competition (BCC).

By participating in such high-calibre competitions, these students are gaining invaluable experience and contributing to the global discourse on sustainable technology. Their success reflects the commitment of UTAR in nurturing young talent and fostering a culture of innovation.
