UTAR bags five medals in Wushu competition 

UTAR Kampar Campus Wushu Sanda team did the University proud by winning two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the LFC Cup Selangor Wushu Invitation Championship 2023, held from 16 to 17 December 2023 at SJK (C) Puay Chai in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. 

Jointly organised by Selangor Wushu, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Malaysia and the Malaysia Wushu Association, the championship aimed at promoting a positive environment for youth development. The LFC Cup Selangor Wushu Invitation Championship 2023 also served as a platform for young students and teens to engage in physical activity that promotes social development through teamwork and builds confidence in their physical abilities. The competition was supported by Lim Fried Chicken (LFC). 

The five medalists, who competed in various weight categories of men’s and women’s Sanda events, were Bachelor of Accounting student Teo Zi Han, Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) Psychology student Quennie Bong Hui Wen, Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) Communications and Networking student Hi Kai Jie, Bachelor of Marketing (Honours) student Cheng Shun Zhe and Foundation in Arts student Aw Shao Heng. 

The winners walked away with a trophy, certificate of participation and certificate of achievement each. 

The gold medalists Teo and Hi said, “We are so happy that we won gold medals this round. We joined this competition because we wanted to test our own level of competence in Sanda. We feel very happy and grateful to have won this competition. By joining the competition, we were able to master the martial arts skills even more. It is indeed a great experience for the two of us.” 

Meanwhile, the silver medalists Bong and Cheng said, “Thank you UTAR and the organiser for giving us this opportunity to compete in the championship. Thank you to our coaches for guiding and encouraging us well throughout the championship.” 

Additionally, the bronze medal winner Aw enthused, “This competition is really an eye-opener and I’m glad that I could win a bronze medal in this competition. This competition has taught me to be more determined and persistent.”

On the other hand, the team leader, Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Entrepreneurship student Ling Leh Ho concluded, “It was a big step forward for all of us. I like to take part in competitions as I feel it is a good opportunity for young players like us to watch and learn from other players.”
