Students secure first and second prizes at AIGC Competition in Fuzhou, China

Congratulations to UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) students Bryan Lee Wen Swen, Tan Jing Jie and Joshua Yii Zhu Hee for obtaining outstanding results at the final round of the Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) Competition, held from 19 to 22 December 2023 in Fuzhou, China.

The students were required to work in pairs in the final round of the competition. There was a total of 10 groups in the Overseas Chinese Students category. Bryan Lee Wen Swen was paired up with Universiti Malaya (UM) student Teo Yin Yin. The duo walked away with First Prize while Tan Jing Jie and Joshua Yii Zhu Hee, who paired up in a team, were awarded Second Prize. All of them walked away with a trophy.

The competition was closely integrated with the new generation AIGC generative artificial intelligence industry development strategic plan and the technological development direction of artificial intelligence in computer-related fields. It adopted the mode of live online question answering + AIGC technical practical operation.

The topics of the competition included the examination of theoretical knowledge such as artificial intelligence machine learning, environment construction, data processing, model construction and training, model deployment, model fine-tuning, application development, and the latest models. The participating teams were also required to carry out an on-site practical design based on the relevant technical competition questions of the given AIGC content.

LKC FES Head of Department of Internet Engineering and Computer Science Ts Dr Hoo Meei Hao and FICT Head of Department of Digital Economy Technology Ts Dr Ooi Joo On collaborated with the organiser and supervised the preliminary round of the AIGC competition, which took place on 9 December 2023 at Sungai Long Campus. There was a total of 49 participants in the preliminary competition. Out of the 49 participants, Dr Hoo led the group of 15 students from the Sungai Long Campus, while Dr Ooi handled 34 students from the Kampar Campus.

Out of the 49 registered participants in the preliminary round, only seven students made it to the final round in Fuzhou. Among them were Bryan Lee Wen Swen, Tan Jing Jie and Joshua Yii Zhu Hee from LKC FES, and Chan Pei Sein, Chew Ke Xin, Chia Wan Jun and Lau Zhi Sen from FICT. These seven students individually, demonstrated exceptional performance, securing higher scores in the competition.

AIGC Competition is one of the competitions under the 2023 Belt & Road and Brics Skills Development & Technology Innovation Competition. Since 2017, the competition has successfully gone through six sessions, attracting the enthusiastic participation of more than 160,000 people, and has become an important platform for deepening cooperation and seeking common development among BRICS countries. Through this competition, more outstanding talents will be cultivated and reserved for the future of BRICS countries. At the same time, technical exchanges and cooperation between various institutions, enterprises, institutions, and countries can also be strengthened to jointly promote the development and application of big data technology and jointly serve regional economic development.

The AIGC Competition was organised by the China Section of the BRICS Business Council Skills Development Working Group, and co-organised by Beijing Kongyue Technology Co. Ltd., Tencent Cloud Computing (Beijing) Co. Ltd., and Beijing ARC Xinxing Science & Technology Co. Ltd. It was hosted by China Section of BRICS Business Council, International Alliance of Skills Development for Belt & Road and BRICS, and "Belt & Road" and BRICS Training Centre for Skills Development and Technology Innovation along with China Association of Inventions, and Ministry of Education (MOE) China Centre for International People-to-People Ex-change.
