On 15 June 2024, UTAR Surgical Society achieved remarkable success at the Case-Based Learning Intervarsity Challenge hosted by the International Medical University (IMU). This prestigious competition, which took place at IMU University Bukit Jalil and online via Microsoft Teams, saw the participation of 15 teams from various universities, all vying for top honours.

The UTAR team, comprising Lee Jun Wei, Loh Shi Xiang, and Tan Yu Ching, all Year 2 MBBS students from M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, showcased exceptional skills and dedication. Under the guidance of their advisors, Dr Yan Naing Soe, Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr Wint Wah Myint Oo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, and Dr Hnin Pwint Phyu, Senior Lecturer, Department of Preclinical MBBS program, the team excelled in the competition.

In the initial rounds, the UTAR team displayed their clinical knowledge and problem-solving abilities, which earned them a spot in the finals. Their relentless effort and strategic approach were rewarded as they secured second place in the final round, along with a cash prize of RM450.

Reflecting on their achievement, the team expressed
their gratitude towards their advisors and lecturers from the UTAR Surgical
Society. They acknowledged the guidance and preparation provided by their
advisors as crucial to their success. Winning this award at the national
level was described as a proud moment for the team.
This event marks a significant milestone as it is the
first time the UTAR Surgical Society has sent a team to a national
competition. The collaborative efforts between the Department of Anatomy at
IMU and the UTAR Surgical Society have been instrumental in preparing the
students for such high-calibre events. These collaborations include annual
symposiums, hands-on surgical training, and competitions that enhance the
practical skills and theoretical knowledge of the students.
The successful participation of the UTAR team in this national challenge not only highlights the excellence of UTAR’s MBBS programme but also sets a precedent for future competitions. It exemplifies the University’s commitment to fostering academic and professional growth among its students through rigorous training and mentorship.
