Postgraduate student’s research garners second prize at healthcare and technology conference

Master of Science in Biological Science student Shawn Samson Ong Tze Xian secured second prize for his research on improving male infertility at the Next Generation of Care: Merging Healthcare & Technology Conference, held on 2 May 2024 at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. The conference was a collaborative effort organised by the Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (IRDI) and the School of Medicine (SOM) of International Medical University (IMU), in conjunction with the International Undergraduate Medical Research Conference 2024 (IUMRC2024).

The conference, designed to bridge the gap between research, technology, and healthcare with an emphasis on translating scientific advancements into clinical applications, showcased cutting-edge technologies and tools revolutionising healthcare research. It also engaged the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other stakeholders in policy discussions for digital diagnosis in Malaysia.

Themed ‘Merging Research, Technology and Healthcare’ the conference also provided a platform for undergraduate and postgraduate students to present their research.

Among the participants, UTAR Faculty of Science (FSC) Master’s student Ong’s research project, titled “Potential of Kaempferia parviflora Extract in Ameliorating Male Infertility Induced by Fenitrothion in a Murine Model,” was particularly noteworthy.

His study explored the antioxidant properties of Kaempferia parviflora extract (KPE) and its potential mitigating effects on fenitrothion (FNT)-induced male reproductive impairment in mice. The research demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of K. parviflora significantly improved sperm quality, serum testosterone levels, and testicular histology in treated mice, highlighting its potential as an alternative treatment for male infertility.

When asked about what motivates and inspires him to explore scientific research, Shawn remarked, “My interest in scientific research and the desire to enhance my knowledge inspired me to undertake this project. Hard work and patience are the best companions towards success.” He attributed his achievement to his strong determination and the continuous support from his supervisors, lecturers and friends at UTAR.

The research has significant practical applications, offering better insights into the use of plant extracts in treating infertility. The findings provide a foundation for future studies on the sub-chronic treatment of KPE and its potential use in clinical settings for infertile individuals. This research not only contributes to the scientific community but also has the potential to enhance practical knowledge and experience in the healthcare field, benefiting society and the industry.

Ong was awarded second prize, which included a cash prize of RM300. This recognition not only celebrates his hard work and dedication but also highlights the importance of innovative research in advancing healthcare.
