UTAR graduate Liew Li Wen awarded MEXT 2024 scholarship for master's degree in Japan

UTAR graduate Liew Li Wen received the MEXT 2024 scholarship for her pursuit of a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences in Japan. The scholarship award was presented to her during the MEXT Scholarships 2024 Pre-Departure Orientation Dinner on 22 March 2024 at the Eastin Hotel. His Excellency Takahashi Katsuhiko, the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia presented the award.

Also, in attendance at the ceremony were JAGAM’s Honorary Patron Mr Goh Peng Ooi, JAGAM President Mr Gary Tang and UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat.

Liew was selected as the representative to present a speech at the ceremony. She was also selected as JAGAM student ambassador to ASCOJA ASJA - (ASEAN Alumni) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Liew stated that she would attend the JASSO Japanese language preparatory course in Shinjuku for six months, followed by another six months as a non-regular student at the University of Tsukuba. Upon passing the entrance exam, her next step would involve enrolling in the prestigious master’s programme in Environmental Sciences at the University of Tsukuba. With this trajectory mapped out, she anticipated that her educational journey in Japan would extend for three years.

MEXT Scholarships, administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, provide extensive financial assistance. It covers various expenses including tuition fees, accommodation, monthly living allowances, and round-trip airfare. These scholarships, offered by the Japanese government, are available to students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees across a wide range of educational institutions. Candidates applying for a master’s programme are required to possess a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and should be under 35 years of age, demonstrating proficiency in either English or Japanese language.
