FBF academics honoured with Emerald Literati 2024 Outstanding Reviewer Awards

Two academics from the Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), Dr Hew Jun Jie and Assoc Prof Dr Choong Yuen Onn, were recognised at the Emerald Literati Awards 2024 for their exceptional contributions to the academic peer review process. The awards ceremony, organised by Emerald Publishing, was held on 23 October 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus.

The Emerald Literati Awards recognise impactful contributions to scholarly research. Each year, awards are presented in three categories, namely Outstanding Papers, Outstanding Reviewers, and Outstanding Author Contributions. The Outstanding Reviewer Award specifically honours reviewers for their constructive feedback, timeliness, and commitment to upholding academic standards, significantly advancing their fields.

Dr Hew received the Outstanding Reviewer Award for his dedicated contributions to the International Journal of Bank Marketing (IJBM), a Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) journal ranked as an A-tier publication by the Australian Business Deans Council. He has completed 32 reviews for IJBM, providing detailed and constructive feedback to ensure high academic standards.

Reflecting on his achievement, Dr Hew shared, “Peer review is a crucial part of scholarly publishing, and I approach it with a strong sense of responsibility. I believe my selection as the winner stems from my commitment to providing punctual and high-quality reviews. This recognition motivates me to continue supporting the academic community.”

Dr Hew expressed his gratitude to the UTAR management for their flexibility in managing workloads, enabling him to contribute as a peer reviewer for 45 academic journals, completing an impressive 263 reviews since 2016.

Meanwhile, Dr Choong was honoured with the Outstanding Reviewer Award for his work with Quality Assurance in Education and Tourism Critique. This marks his third consecutive award from Quality Assurance in Education (2022, 2023, and 2024) and his first award from Tourism Critique.

Speaking about the award, Dr Choong said, “It is my responsibility to ensure that only high-quality research is accepted. This recognition inspires me to continue contributing to the academic community through thoughtful reviews. I am truly honoured to receive this award.”

Dr Choong also credited UTAR’s support for his success and said, “UTAR’s collaborative environment and commitment to academic excellence have been instrumental in refining my skills as a reviewer. This achievement reflects not just my efforts but also the opportunities and encouragement from UTAR’s academic community.”

These awards highlight UTAR’s strong emphasis on academic integrity, research quality, and the professional development of its academics. The University takes immense pride in the dedication and accomplishments of Dr Hew and Dr Choong, whose contributions uphold UTAR’s mission to advance knowledge and foster excellence in research.
