Architecture students from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty
of Engineering and Science
(LKC FES) won several awards at the Zaha
Hadid Architecture Model Making Competition, held on 20 July 2024 at the PAM
(Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia) Centre. The competition, organised by the
Malaysia Architecture Students Alliance (MASA), provided a platform for
aspiring architects to showcase their exceptional model-making skills.

The
Architecture students from UTAR
performed remarkably well, securing multiple accolades. Chow Liang
Cheng and Wong Wei Ming won the 1st Place, showcasing their exceptional
design skills. Cheah Tian Yow and Tee Shu Teng received the Best Use of
Materials award, demonstrating their innovative approach to model
construction. Wong Tiong Jie and Chua Juan Xia won the 3rd consolation prize
for their impressive model. The winners received cash prizes alongside
architecture magazines, offering both financial support and resources for
further architectural exploration.
The Zaha Hadid Model Making Competition, designed to
foster creativity and technical skill, attracted participants from various
universities. The event saw enthusiastic engagement from students who
presented intricate models that reflected a deep understanding of Zaha
Hadid’s architectural principles, blending aesthetics with structural
ingenuity.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in lively
discussions with the judges, who provided insightful feedback, further
enhancing the educational value of the competition. The event concluded with
a prize-giving ceremony, which recognised not only the top winners but also
those who showcased creativity and innovation.

The competition proved to be an enriching experience
for the students, reinforcing the importance of model-making in
architectural education. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4,
Quality Education, and SDG 9, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, the
competition not only celebrated academic excellence but also encouraged
sustainable architectural practices and innovative solutions.
It also highlighted UTAR’s growing reputation in the field of architecture, with its students continuously excelling in national and international competitions.
