LKC FES academics win Best Paper Award at International Architecture Conference in Japan

Three academics from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) achieved international recognition when they received the Best Paper Award at the 5th International Civil Engineering and Architecture Conference 2025 (CEAC 2025), held from 28 to 31 March 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. As part of the recognition, they received a Best Paper certificate, a special gift, and had their names and photo featured on the conference’s history webpage.

The winning team, comprising LAr Ts Dr Beh Jing Han, Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design Head Ts Dr Tan Kok Hong, and Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Yew Ming Kun, received the award for their research paper titled Exploring Architecture Students’ Awareness of Bamboo as A Green Building Material.

The paper was presented onsite by Dr Beh on 29 March 2025 during the oral presentation session. The award was announced at the conference dinner and presented by Conference Chairman Prof C.W. Lim.

Their study explores the current understanding and key factors influencing architecture students’ awareness of bamboo as a sustainable alternative to conventional building materials. The research highlights the potential of bamboo as a renewable, eco-friendly resource in the construction industry and offers valuable insights for promoting sustainable architectural practices.

The paper aligns with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Commenting on the recognition, the team said, “It is a great honour to receive this Best Paper Award as a recognition of our research. We will continue our best efforts in the ongoing research to promote bamboo as a sustainable building material aligned with the SDG 17 goal.”

CEAC 2025 featured over 130 papers from 20 economies including China, USA, Japan, Norway, Malaysia, and others, offering a global platform for academic exchange in architecture and civil engineering.
