Liu Chang and her certificate
Liu Chang, a PhD student from the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), presented her paper at the Frontiers in Food Culture Geography and Gourmet Tourism Research Forum (饮食文化地理与美食旅游研究前沿论坛), held at Yangzhou University, China, on 18 November 2024. She was awarded the Outstanding Paper Award (优秀论文奖). Her paper, titled Shunde Double-layer Milk Custard: The Construction and Performance of Local Food as Intangible Cultural Heritage (顺德双皮奶:地方饮食类非物质文化遗产的构建与展演), was selected from over 60 submissions. This achievement highlights her strong academic foundation and research capabilities.
The paper was co-authored by UTAR ICS Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Assoc Prof Dr Chin Chong Foh, and Shunde Polytechnic academic Prof Yang Mingyi. The forum recognised a total of 10 outstanding papers, with awardees from prestigious institutions such as Fudan University, Southwest University, Southwest Minzu University, and Yangzhou University.

Liu’s research focused on the cultural evolution of Shunde Double-layer Milk Custard, exploring how this local delicacy was designated as intangible cultural heritage and the social dynamics behind it. Her work not only enriched academic discussions on intangible cultural heritage but also emphasised the role of cultural memory in preserving regional cuisine.
UTAR congratulates Liu on her achievement. Her award is a testament to the quality of education at the institute and reflects the spirit of academic excellence upheld by its scholars and students.
