LKC FES academic wins Best Presenter Award at MECON 2025

UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) academic, Ts Dr Hafiz bin Basarudin, was awarded the Best Presenter Award at the Multimedia University Engineering Conference 2025 (MECON 2025). The award was announced during the virtual closing ceremony on 23 July 2025, following the physical conference hosted at Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya from 21 to 23 July 2025. This recognition celebrates excellence in research communication, specifically highlighting Dr Hafiz’s confident delivery and adept handling of technical discussions during his presentation.

Dr Hafiz’s award-winning presentation featured his ground-breaking research paper titled Evaluation of AI Models for Rain Rate Prediction to Support Communication Networks in Malaysia. Aligned with MECON 2025’s theme, Embracing the Future of Smart World Through Engineering, AI and Technology, his work addressed a critical national challenge: optimising AI models to predict rainfall intensity and mitigate disruptions to Malaysia’s wireless networks during monsoon seasons. The research contributes directly to developing resilient telecommunication infrastructure for the region.

When asked about his participation, Dr Hafiz said, “I wanted to present this research and secure publication in IEEE Xplore with Scopus indexing.” He noted the conference’s focus on AI and wireless technology perfectly matched his work’s scope. Reflecting on the award’s significance, he added, “This validates my effort to deploy AI for real-world challenges in Malaysia’s climate context and elevates UTAR’s research visibility.” He received a Best Presenter Award certificate for his achievement.
