UTAR is proud to celebrate the success of Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) academic Dr Hooi Chee Mei, together with Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) students Tan Kye Wen and Kuik Rui Luan, who won the Silver Medal (Professional Category) at the Virtual Innovation Competition (VIC) 2025. The results were announced by the organiser on 25 June 2025.
Their winning project, titled Identification of Writers’ Awareness and Readers’ Engagement through the Incorporation of an Innovative and Comprehensive Online Module in Writing Professional Reports, introduced a pedagogical tool aimed at enhancing students’ writing competencies.
The module comprises step-by-step guidelines, pre- and post-tests using a Metadiscourse Awareness Test, and writing prompts based on news articles presented both with and without metadiscourse. These elements aim to increase students’ understanding of metadiscourse features and their influence on reader engagement. To further improve accessibility and interactivity, the module was developed in an online format using Flip Book, providing a dynamic platform for students to engage with the content and apply metadiscourse effectively in professional writing.
The Virtual Innovation Competition 2025 was jointly organised by DIGIT360 and the Digital Information Interest Group (DIGIT), in collaboration with a consortium of prestigious institutions and organisations from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Yemen. These included Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kelantan Branch, Universitas Ngudi Waluyo, Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, Indian Innovators Association, The Union of Arab Academics, and others.
The competition served as an international platform to promote a culture of innovation and design, particularly in teaching and learning, encouraging educators, students, and the public to showcase their work through digital means.
