Best Presenter Award at ICSET 2025

Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science academic Ir Ts Dr Tan Ooi Kuan received the Best Presenter Award at the 5th International Conference on Science, Engineering, and Technology (ICSET 2025).

The international conference, co-organised by Universiti Malaysia Perlis and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, was held from 13 to 14 November 2025 at The Pacific Sutera Hotel, Kota Kinabalu. ICSET 2025 attracted 107 participants, comprising researchers, academicians, and industry experts from various disciplines.

ICSET 2025 served as a global platform for the exchange of innovative ideas and cutting-edge research in science, engineering, and technology, under the theme Innovations and Advancements in Science, Engineering, and Technology for a Sustainable Future. The conference featured four main tracks, including Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering, under which Dr Tan presented his research.

Dr Tan’s award-winning paper, titled Statistical Modelling and Resilience Management of Flood Mitigation Systems in Puncak Alam, was presented under Track 3: Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The study addressed persistent flooding issues in Puncak Alam, which have continued despite substantial government investments in flood mitigation infrastructure.

The research adopted a novel approach by examining gender perceptions in the public evaluation of flood mitigation systems, focusing on risk awareness, preparedness, and levels of trust. The findings revealed significant gender-based differences in priorities and perceptions, highlighting the importance of incorporating gender-sensitive strategies in the planning and management of flood mitigation systems. Such an approach is crucial for enhancing community resilience and improving the effectiveness of disaster risk management efforts.

Dr Tan said, “Confidence is key in presenting research effectively. This recognition affirms the importance of inclusive, data-driven approaches in strengthening flood mitigation, and motivates me to continue contributing towards resilient and sustainable infrastructure solutions.”
