A team of talented students from UTAR showcased their creativity and artistry by securing third place at the International Collegiate Snow Sculpture Contest (ICSSC) 2025, representing Malaysia at the competition. The competition, held from 4 to 7 January 2025 in Harbin, China, brought together students from around the world to demonstrate their skills in snow sculpting.
The team, comprised of Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Architecture students Alif Asyraf bin Anwar Lai and Kennath Selvanesan, was supervised by Department of Architecture & Sustainable Design Specialist Abd Muluk bin Abd Manan.
The team impressed judges and attendees alike with their stunning ice sculpture titled Wau Burung (瓦乌鸟). Drawing inspiration from Malaysia’s traditional Wau Burung kite and its symbolic connection to the hornbill, a revered bird in Malaysian culture, the sculpture represented harmony and prosperity.
They explained, “As a token of friendship and goodwill, we offer this sculpture from Malaysia to our generous hosts in Harbin, China, hoping it will symbolise mutual respect, cultural exchange, and the enduring connection between Malaysia and China.”
Organised by the National Instructive Committee of Industrial Design Education and the Ministry of Education, China, and hosted by Harbin Engineering University (HEU) with support from the Organising Committee of the 9th Asian Winter Games, the competition aimed to popularise ice and snow culture, promote global student interaction, showcase creative talent, and offer participants an opportunity to experience Harbin’s unique traditions.
This remarkable achievement highlights UTAR’s dedication to fostering creativity and innovation among its students. The team’s success not only brought pride to the university but also demonstrated the global calibre of UTAR talents, solidifying its reputation for excellence.
