UTAR Kampar Campus sent a team of 11 players to compete in the ASICS MASISWA Badminton Championship 2025 and University Cup 2025, organised by Strivnite at Taylor’s University, Subang Jaya, Selangor, from 26 to 30 June 2025.
The team demonstrated commendable sportsmanship and skill, with several players advancing to the quarter-final and semi-final rounds, earning recognition for their strong performances throughout the tournament. Team Captain, Bachelor of Communication (Honours) Advertising student Leong Yik Hung, together with Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Petrochemical Engineering student Tan Kai Shiuan, achieved first runner-up in the Men’s Doubles category, while Foundation student Yap Chung Chuen secured second runner-up in the Men’s Singles.
This tournament, open exclusively to students from Malaysian private universities, also serves as a selection platform for the Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Malaysia (SIPMA). Top performers may be chosen to represent MASISWA in the upcoming SIPMA games. The players gave their best to showcase their talent and potential, and the achievements by Leong, Tan, and Yap are commendable.
“Although we did not bring home the gold medal, winning silver and bronze medals has made UTAR proud. We sincerely thank UTAR for the opportunity and for its unwavering support in sponsoring our team. Special thanks go to the badminton team officer from the Department of Student Affairs, Mr Zulhanizam bin Zakaria, for his constant guidance and support,” the team shared.
Foundation student, Yap enthused, “I’m grateful to my brothers and sisters for their support throughout the entire tournament. Without them, I don’t think I would have been able to achieve this victory.” This was Yap’s first time representing UTAR at such a major event, following in the footsteps of his seniors.
Participating in tournaments like these not only raises UTAR’s profile but also demonstrates that the University values both academic excellence and extracurricular achievement.
