FCI academics awarded research grant from PORT Ipoh

In a significant milestone for academic research and technological innovation, four academics from the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) and the Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity (CITC) have been awarded the Dana Kreatif Perak 2025 grant. The grant, by PORT Ipoh, serves as a strong testament to the university’s commitment to groundbreaking research and the integration of creative technologies in cultural preservation.

The project, led by FCI Department of Game Studies academic Ts Dr Cheng Kin Meng, includes CITC Chairperson Ts Ng Perng Jeu, FCI Department of Lab Management & Safety Administration Head Ts Chong Hwei Teeng, and FCI Department of Multimedia Design & Animation academic Ts Mohd Fairuz bin Ali as co-researchers.

Their project builds upon the previous 2024 initiative, focusing on the enhancement of a digital archiving platform for Perak Cave. By developing a more advanced website with improved human-computer interaction, the team aims to further preserve and disseminate the historical cave paintings of Perak, some of which date back to the Neolithic era, approximately 2,000 years ago. This initiative not only minimises physical damage to these cultural artefacts but also increases global accessibility and awareness through immersive digital experiences.

Dr Cheng expressed his gratitude, “For the second time, I would like to thank Port Ipoh for granting us the Dana Kreatif Perak 2025. This grant enables us to continue our work in digitally archiving Perak Cave as part of our effort to preserve cultural heritage. Special thanks to UTAR and our dedicated team members who have contributed their time and expertise to make this initiative a success.”

Similarly, Ts Ng acknowledged the essential support received. “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dana Kreatif Perak for their generous and unwavering support. The investment in creative research has had a profound societal impact, and we look forward to more collaborations in the future. A special thanks to all individuals and organisations that have supported us throughout this journey. Their encouragement was instrumental in making this project a reality,” he said.

Echoing these sentiments, Ts Mohd Fairuz emphasised the role of technology in cultural preservation, “This project showcases how digital tools can protect and enhance our understanding of historical and cultural assets. By integrating creative solutions, we ensure that these invaluable artefacts are safeguarded for future generations. The support from funding bodies like Dana Kreatif Perak is crucial in sustaining and expanding such initiatives.”

Ts Chong added, “Every individual has a role to play in shaping the future. With a strong and passionate team, we can contribute to sustainable development and cultural preservation.”

Dana Kreatif Perak PORT (Port Ipoh) continues to play a vital role in fostering artistic and technological advancements by providing opportunities, particularly for the youth in Perak. Their initiatives support the development of talents in visual arts, performing arts, literature, film, and other creative fields while encouraging knowledge-sharing through forums and workshops. Their motto, “Unity Thru Arts,” highlights the power of culture and creativity in bringing diverse communities together.

With this continued support, the research team aims to further refine their digital archiving platform, making it an essential tool for researchers, educators, and the general public while strengthening the link between technology and heritage preservation.
