Demonstrating strength, discipline and resilience, four students from UTAR delivered an impressive performance at the Kejohanan Sanda King Malaysia Terbuka Kali Ke-2 2025, clinching three silver medals and one bronze medal.
The prestigious event was held from 20 to 23 March 2025 at Dewan Tertutup Negeri Sembilan, Chin Woo Athletic Association, Seremban. It was organised by Persekutuan Wushu Malaysia, with the support from multiple national and international sporting bodies.
The UTAR students, Bachelor of Science (Honours) Logistics and International Shipping student Chua Soon Cheng, Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) student Koh Zheng Xun, Foundation in Arts student Fanzy bin Jurus, and Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Healthcare Management student Aw Shao Heng competed in the above 18 male categories and stood out among many skilled participants from across the region. Their achievements were as follows:
The Kejohanan Sanda King Malaysia Terbuka aims to elevate the sport of Sanda, a full-contact combat sport under Wushu, to greater prominence on the international stage. It also served as a selection platform for the upcoming Kejohanan Sanda Jemputan ASEAN–China 2025.
The students were led by team leader Ling Leh Ho, a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Entrepreneurship student, under the banner of the UTAR Wushu Club. Reflecting on their achievements, each student shared how the journey had been both a personal challenge and a growth experience.
Chua, silver medallist, remarked, “Life is short. Always challenge yourself and step outside of the comfort zone.” His passion and perseverance were echoed by Koh, who noted, “I joined the competition for the experience and the joy of fighting strong opponents. It feels good to win something, although I wished there had been more participants.”
Meanwhile, bronze medallist Aw kept his motivation simple yet powerful, saying, “Without motivation, there will be no discipline.” Fanzy, who won silver in the heavyweight category, shared, “This competition was a challenge for me, and winning an award was completely beyond my expectations.”
All four students expressed deep appreciation for the support provided by UTAR. Aw credited UTAR’s sponsorship, saying it enabled him to participate without financial burden. Chua highlighted the value of co-curricular activities in helping students explore their passions, adding, “I thank UTAR for introducing me to this sport which keeps me healthy and helps relieve stress.”
Koh acknowledged the gym and other facilities provided by UTAR that supported his training. Fanzy summed up his gratitude, saying, “I am truly grateful to UTAR and the UTAR Wushu Club for giving me this opportunity and providing such a valuable platform.”
This remarkable achievement not only highlights the talent and dedication of UTAR students but also reflects the university’s commitment to promoting holistic student development through sports and co-curricular activities. The experience gained by the team at the Kejohanan Sanda King Malaysia Terbuka will undoubtedly serve as a stepping stone to greater achievements in the future, both in sports and in life.
