Dr Lam Sze Mun recognised among Malaysia’s top researchers in Materials Science

UTAR is proud to share that Assoc Prof ChM Ts Dr Lam Sze Mun from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT), has been listed among the top researchers in the field of Materials Science by Research.com, a leading academic platform for scientists.

In the recently released 2025 Edition of the Ranking of Best Scientists in Materials Science, Dr Lam was ranked 35th in Malaysia and was also recognised at the global level. The rankings are based on the D-index (Discipline H-index), which considers only publications and citation metrics within the specific field of Materials Science.

Responding to the announcement, Dr Lam said, “I feel truly honoured and grateful to be recognised among the top materials scientists in Malaysia and globally. It’s a rewarding acknowledgement of my work, and inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery.”

She added, “This recognition is deeply meaningful to me both personally and professionally. It validates my dedication to materials science and inspires me to keep contributing to the field. I hope it encourages others to pursue their passions in research and innovation.”

Dr Lam’s research focuses on catalytic technologies for wastewater purification and energy recovery. She explained, “Materials science plays a crucial role in advancing these technologies. By developing highly efficient catalysts with tailored properties, we can accelerate chemical reactions that break down pollutants, ensuring cleaner water and promoting sustainability. In the energy domain, catalytic materials enhance the conversion of waste into usable energy, offering greener alternatives.”

Among her most notable contributions are innovations in high-performance catalysts that support pollutant removal and improve energy conversion efficiency. These have real-world applications in environmental protection and clean energy, aligning closely with global sustainability goals.

On what drives the strong academic impact of her research, Dr Lam attributed it to practical relevance and collaboration. “My work is grounded in solving real-world problems, and that resonates with the scientific community. Rigorous methodology, relevance to sustainability, and collaborative efforts have been crucial in shaping the impact of my publications.”

She also acknowledged key collaborators who have supported her research journey. “I am grateful to my core team and colleagues, especially Prof ChM Ts Dr Sin Jin Chung from UTAR, Prof Abdul Rahman Mohamed from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Prof Dr Zeng Honghu from Guilin University of Technology, China. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in driving impactful research.”

Dr Lam expressed appreciation for UTAR’s continuous support in advancing her research. “UTAR provides access to facilities, internal research funding, and opportunities for collaboration. The university also supports overseas research leave, which has enabled me to gain international exposure and build networks. Participation in local and international conferences has been particularly beneficial in sharing ideas and staying updated on recent developments.”

Reflecting on her research journey, Dr Lam shared, “Challenges are part of the process. From securing funding to overcoming technical hurdles in catalyst development, the journey has been demanding. Persistence, collaboration, and innovation have been key to overcoming these obstacles. I have also benefited greatly from international collaborations and the use of advanced analytical tools.”

Dr Lam’s achievement not only highlights her contributions to the field of materials science but also highlights UTAR’s commitment to supporting impactful research that addresses global challenges.
