Benjamin Wong Mun Fhee, a student of the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), won the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 2025 3rd Power Electronics and Power System Conference (PEPSC 2025), held from 13 to 16 November 2025 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
PEPSC 2025, themed Digital, Intelligent Power Conversion and New Power System, provided a platform for researchers and engineers to share innovative ideas, advanced skills, and successful practices in the field of power electronics and power systems. The four-day conference began with a reception, allowing participants to network with conference chairs, session chairs, and fellow attendees.
Benjamin Wong presented his research project titled Impact of Forecasting Time Horizon on BESS Performance: A Comparative Study for Peak Demand Reductions, supervised by LKC FES Centre for Power Systems and Electricity Chairperson Ir Prof Dr Lim Yun Seng. His work investigates advanced battery energy storage system (BESS) control strategies to optimise peak demand reductions, addressing the critical challenge of high electricity costs for commercial users. The study compared four control strategies, with the short-term threshold prediction method emerging as the most effective, achieving an average peak demand reduction of 50% and a monthly maximum demand reduction of 47%. The findings provide a valuable framework for evaluating BESS control strategies and maximising cost savings.
Reflecting on the achievement, Benjamin Wong said, “Winning this award has been an amazing experience for me and my supervisor Prof Lim Yun Seng because we were able to present meaningful results to an audience who are equally interested in the energy storage systems for maximum demand reductions. The recognition also means that our work is on par with the international standards.” He added that the competition allowed him to share and disseminate key research findings on BESS performance.
The award, accompanied by a certificate, recognises Benjamin Wong’s outstanding contribution to the field of energy storage and power system research. UTAR extends its heartfelt congratulations to him for this remarkable achievement.
PEPSC 2025 was co-organised by UTAR and the Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers (HKSME), technically sponsored by the IEEE PES Malaysia Chapter and Chongqing University, and supported by the South China University of Technology, the University of Electronic Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hangzhou Dianzi University, and the Center for Power Engineering (CPE), Nanyang Technological University, with various media support.
