This impressive victory saw the UTAR team compete against 13 other local teams, including Brickfields Asia College, Sunway University, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Multimedia University (MMU Melaka and MMU Cyberjaya), and Monash University Malaysia. Over six intense matches, the UTAR team demonstrated exceptional skill, strategy, and teamwork.

The team, consisting of Nik Khai Yiang, Tay Zhi Wei, Yaw Wei Jian, Lee Yan Kien, Quek Xin Ker, and Philia Ku Ying Ni, began their campaign with decisive wins in the qualifying rounds. They progressed through the quarter-finals and semi-finals, debating thought-provoking topics ranging from the ethics of equal contribution in relationships and the impact of artificial intelligence on human happiness to the societal implications of the gig economy.

The grand finale against Monash University Malaysia tackled the critical issue of campus bullying, with the motion Curbing campus bullying: the school’s role is key / the parents’ role is key (遏制校园霸凌,关键在校方的角色/关键在父母的角色). UTAR’s compelling arguments and flawless delivery secured a resounding 3–0 victory, clinching the championship title.

Adding to the team’s glory, Tay Zhi Wei was awarded the title of Overall Best Debater of the entire tournament, having been named Best Debater in all six matches in which he participated. This remarkable achievement highlights his outstanding individual performance in argumentation, clarity, and adaptability under pressure.

As champions, the team received a cash prize of RM1,588, while Tay Zhi Wei was awarded RM388 for his Best Debater achievement. More significantly, this victory has earned UTAR the honour of representing Malaysia at the Chinese Debate World Cup Grand Finals, scheduled to be held in China in 2026.

Reflecting on their achievement, the team emphasised the rigorous preparation and cohesive teamwork that underpinned their success. “This achievement reflects the team’s strong preparation, strategic coordination, and consistent performance across all rounds,” shared a team representative. They highlighted how the competition honed their articulation, logical reasoning, and ability to perform under pressure, significantly contributing to their development in analytical thinking and public speaking.

The experience also reinforced the values of collaboration. Members worked closely on case preparation, strategic planning, and in-round adjustments, strengthening their mutual understanding and coordination.

Beyond the competitive arena, the team valued the opportunity to observe other debates and interact with teams from various universities, gaining invaluable experience, expanding their networks, and broadening their perspectives.

This accomplishment underscores UTAR’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates who excel not only academically but also in soft skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork. The entire UTAR community extends its heartiest congratulations to the debate team and wishes them the very best as they prepare to make Malaysia proud on the world stage in China next year.
