Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunghai University (THU), Taiwan ,
signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at a ceremony held at UTAR Kuala
Lumpur Campus in Setapak on 20 December 2010.
The ceremony was graced by Deputy Minister of Higher Education Malaysia,
Dato' Dr. Hou Kok Chung as the Guest of Honour.
UTAR President Ir Professor Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik signed the MoU on
behalf of UTAR, while Professor Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR Vice President
(Internationalisation and Academic Development), signed as the witness. THU
President Professor Dr. Haydn H.D. Chen signed on behalf of his university
and his colleagues Professor Dr. Chiu Wei-Chun, Dean of College of Arts, and
Professor Dr. Huang Guang-Yuh, Dean of College of Science, signed as
witnesses.
The MoU saw UTAR, a private university in Malaysia and THU, a private
university in Taichung City , Taiwan , formally agreeing on working together
on specific international collaboration programmes.
Under the MoU, the two parties will initiate and implement projects that
cover research and development, academic development exchanges, developing
new teaching and learning technologies, study visits and student exchange.
Prof. Chuah said that the signing of MoU with Tunghai University would
certainly be a step in the right direction as UTAR is expanding its research
platform to include more collaborative partners. "Both UTAR and Tunghai
University need to work as a team and capitalise on our competencies to
achieve excellence in education through this collaboration," he added.
Prof. Chen in his speech said both parties took two months to prepare and
discuss about the MoU and he was looking forward to a research collaboration
that would benefit the society and nation in all aspects of studies.
Dr. Hou expressed that he is hopeful that the collaboration will be an
active one. Noting Tunghai's history and their academic strengths, and
UTAR's youthfully dynamism to achieve excellence, Dr. Hou said, "I expect
exciting developments to come out of it. I am hopeful it will go beyond the
normal students and staff exchanges, introducing innovativeness in many
areas, including R&D and postgraduate studies."
Since its inception, UTAR has been actively involving in
internationalisation. It has established formal relationships with industry
leaders, professional bodies and education institutions, many of which are
foreign, to collaborate in the areas of research, academic development, and
staff and student development.
