On 11 January 2010 a delegation from the Hong Kong Education Bureau, headed
by its Permanent Secretary, His Excellency Mr. Raymond Wong, visited the
UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus. The delegation included representatives from the
Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.
Aside from H.E Wong, the visitors comprised Ms Deputy Secretary (Education)
Michelle Li Mei-Sheung; Assistant Secretary (Higher Education) Eric Cheng
Siu Fun; Senior Education Officer (School Administration and Support) Li
Mei-fun; Senior Education Officer (External Liaison) Conny Li Chow Yeuk-lan;
Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office Subrina Chow; and Deputy
Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office Law Kim-wai.
On hand to welcome the visitors were UTAR President Ir. Prof. Dato' Dr.
Chuah Hean Teik; Vice President (Internationalisation & Academic
Development) Prof. Dr. Ewe Hong Tat; Deputy Director of the Institute of
Postgraduate Studies & Research Prof. Dr. Faidz Abdul Rahman; Director of
Finance Tham Kam Seng; Registrar Dr. Tan Kee Kong; and Head of the
Department of Internationalisation and Institutional Relations Cheong Chew
Seong.
During the visit, the delegation was shown a video presentation on UTAR's
progress since its establishment. This had certainly impressed H.E Wong and
the other members of the delegation as they posed many questions to Prof.
Chuah during the discussion.
They enquired about the general policy regarding funding, immigration quota,
scholarship programmes, student accommodation, and promotion strategies
undertaken by institutions of higher learning in Malaysia .
The discussion between the two parties included topics such as the
difference between the public and private institutions of higher learning,
twinning programmes and credit transfers. The discussion also covered the
legislative frameworks that govern the higher education segment in Malaysia
.
Prof. Chuah shared with the delegates UTAR's experience in managing rapid
progress as well as the challenges and the University's methods of
overcoming them.
The meeting ended with an exchange of souvenirs and a group photo taking
session.
