Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with
the Ministry of Health (MOH) to use government hospitals and clinics as
teaching and training facilities at a signing ceremony held at the
University's Petaling Jaya Campus on 15 January 2010.
Present to grace the signing ceremony as the Guest of Honour was Minister of
Health Dato Sri Liow Tiong Lai. Also present at the momentous ceremony were
Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dr. Hou Kok Chung, UTAR Council Chairman
Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik, Director General of Ministry of Health Tan Sri Dato'
Seri Dr. Hj. Mohd Ismail Bin Merican, and members of UTAR Education
Foundation and UTAR Council.
It was an historic occasion for the University and UTAR President Prof.
Chuah called it "a three-in-one occasion".
Firstly, it was the signing of agreement between the University and the
Ministry of Health, an agreement which will see the use government hospitals
and health clinics by UTAR as teaching and training hospitals for its
students from its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
UTAR President Ir. Professor Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik was the signatory for
University while the Dean of UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
Emeritus Prof. Dr Cheong Soon Keng was the witness.
MOH Secretary General Dato' Sri Dr. Hj. Mohd Nasir B. Mohd Ashraf was the
signatory for the Ministry of Health and MOH Deputy Director
General (Medical) Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham bin Abdullah was the witness.
Secondly, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dr. Hou was present at the
ceremony to hand over the approval from his Ministry for the University to
offer its first medical degree programme - UTAR Bachelor of Medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S).
Lastly, UTAR President Prof. Chuah told the crowd at the ceremony of the
benevolent contribution of RM1.25 million by the family of Datuk and Datin
Tan Kim Leong for the establishment of an endowed chair in medicine named
'Datuk and Datin Tan Kim Leong Chair of Medicine' which will be under the
new Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
In his speech, Prof. Chuah thanked the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of
Higher Education, and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency for the approval
and support to enable the University's new faculty to offer its first
medical degree programme in May 2010.
Dato' Sri Liow in his speech, said, "Based on UTAR's track record in
producing quality graduates and commitment in promoting lifelong earning, I
have no doubt that the University will attain the same level of excellence
in its new venture."
The ceremony ended with a souvenir presentation and a press conference.
