Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) has joined forces with Monash
University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) to conduct research aimed at
enhancing safety measures in vehicles.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the two institutions,
represented by Prof. Dr. Lee Sze Wei, UTAR Vice President (R&D and
Commercialisation) and his counterpart Prof. Rod McClure, Director of MUARC,
Australia on 4 June 2010 in UTAR Kuala Lumpur campus.
Witnesses for the MoU were Dr. Jennifer Oxley, Associate Director of MUARC
in Malaysia and Dr Tan Yong Chai, UTAR's Deputy Dean in the Faculty of
Engineering and Science. The alliance is expected to establish a good
working relationship between the varsities, promote road safety awareness
among the UTAR community, and produce high-quality research outputs on which
road safety initiatives can be developed.
According to Dr. Tan Ching Seong, UTAR's Chairperson for the Centre of
Vehicular Technology (CVT), a joint-venture research project with MUARC
titled 'Collision Avoidance System' was established in December last year
and further studies will be proposed to MOSTI for funding. The intention is
to come up with a low cost solution to reduce road crashes involving
motorists, especially motorcyclists.
Dr. Tan added that UTAR was also planning to conduct short courses on
vehicle safety and crash investigation for local engineers and other related
industry players. "In addition, we are also looking at students and staff
exchange programmes in the near future," he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. McClure was amazed by the achievements of UTAR. "UTAR has
attained great heights in a short span of seven years and we are thrilled to
team up with the university to undertake further important projects in the
future," he said.
After the MoU signing, the MUARC officials were taken on a tour of the
campus. Also, they met several students from UTAR Faculty of Engineering and
Science who gave presentations on their projects.
