UTAR and CTIM ink pact

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus on 9 November 2010.

With the signing of the MoU, UTAR, a leading private not-for-profit university in Malaysia, and CTIM, a premier body for tax professionals in Malaysia, formally agreed to collaborate together to promote the profession of tax consultants.

Under the MoU, the two parties will jointly conduct training events and career talks on taxation. UTAR will provide CTIM with feedback from the students and lecturers pertaining to the training programmes in taxation. CTIM will assist in continually updating the curriculum on taxation of any UTAR course, sourcing of resource persons among its members to teach taxation related subjects in UTAR, and providing opportunities for practical training in taxation to relevant UTAR students. CTIM will also continuously update UTAR on the continuous professional development programmes.

"At UTAR, we always equip our students with the right technical skills so that they fit easily into the industry; that is why collaboration with professional body such as CTIM is so important," said Ir Professor Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik, President of UTAR in his speech. He added that such collaboration would provide many advantages to UTAR students and thanked CTIM for providing exemptions of eight out of 10 subjects in the CTIM professional examination to UTAR Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) graduates. Professor Chuah concluded, "We always treasure this type of partnership [with CTIM], which will lead to win-win situations for both parties."

Professor Chuah signed the MoU on behalf of UTAR, while Assistant Professor Dr Ong Seng Fook, Dean of Faculty of Accountancy and Management, signed as witness. Signing on behalf of CTIM was its President Mr Khoo Chin Guan and as witness was its immediate-past President Dr Veerinderjeet Singh.

"We certainly look forward to contributing our expertise and knowledge and working together with UTAR with the objective of producing future tax professionals who would have the necessary skills, aptitude and commitment as well as exhibiting the highest standard of professionalism," said Khoo in his speech, adding that he hoped the MoU would inspire more UTAR students to pursue CTIM professional qualification and a career in the field of taxation.

Also present at the ceremony from CTIM were its Council Member Mr Lew Nee Fook, Chairman of Education Committee Ms Seah Siew Yun and Executive Director Ms Ann Vong. From UTAR were Vice President (Student Development and Alumni Relations) Associate Professor Dr Teh Chee Seng, Company Secretary of UTAR Education Foundation Mr Ong Whee Tiong and Dean of Faculty of Business and Finance Associate Professor Dr Ooi Keng Boon.
