UTAR is set to offer the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (Hons) programme at its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) in UTAR Sungai Long campus after receiving the approval to conduct the degree programme in English and Chinese from the Ministry of Higher Education.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dr. Hou Kok Chung was present at a simple presentation ceremony held on 14 October 2010 in UTAR Sungai Long campus to personally hand the letter of approval over to UTAR President Ir. Prof. Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik.
Present at the ceremony were Dean of FMHS Prof. Dr. Cheong Soon Keng, faculty members, students, staff of the university, invited guests and local media members.
In his welcome speech, Prof. Chuah said that the University had ventured into collaborations with local organisations like Tung Shin Hospital and Eu Yan Sang and universities in China like Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in preparation to offer the bachelor's honours degree programme.
Prof. Chuah also told the audience that the University had just received approval to offer two new Health Science degree programmes, namely Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Hons) the day before from the Ministry of Higher Education.
Dr. Hou, in his speech at the ceremony, said that the approval of the degree programme to be conducted partly in Chinese reflected the liberal stance of his Ministry in terms of the pursuit of academic excellence for all. He added, "This approval will also pave the way for TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) experts from China to come here to impart their invaluable expertise, triggering knowledge transfer to our benefit."
After the ceremony, Dr. Hou went for a short tour of the TCM facilities in the campus. Dr. Hou was accompanied by Prof. Chuah, Prof. Cheong and Te Kian Keong of the Department of Chinese Medicine of FMHS.
With the approval, the University is set to accept students for the 5-year undergraduate degree programme's first intake in May 2011. The Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (Hons) programme at UTAR is aimed at producing internationally-recognised TCM practitioners who have acquired an in-depth knowledge of TCM and demonstrate strong ethical values, professionalism, compassion and competence.
