The National Sports Council or Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) held an MoU signing
ceremony on 20 November 2012 at MSN, Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, that was
attended by ten private universities and UTAR was one of them. MoUs were
signed between each of the ten private universities with MSN in support of
scholarships for our Malaysian sportsmen and sportswomen.
Signing the MoU for UTAR was the university President, Ir. Professor
Academician Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik while MSN was represented by the
Director-General, Dato' Seri Zolkples Embong. UTAR Vice President for
Student Development and Alumni Relations, Dr Teh Chee Seng was also present
as witness to the MoU signed.
The guest of honour was the Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dato' Sri Ahmad
Shabery Cheek. Dato' Sri Ahmad in his speech emphasized that while sports is
important as a recreation among the young, studies should not be neglected
and the scholarships they receive will provide the incentive to pursue
tertiary studies.
Also present at the ceremony was YB Senator Gan Ping Sieu, the Deputy
Minister of Youth and Sports who met the representatives of the ten private
universities prior to the ceremony to discuss the details of the ceremony
and the scholarships.
A total of RM6.4 million worth of scholarships were offered from the ten
institutions. The number of scholarships offered by the private universities
range from scholarships for 5 students to 50 students with UTAR offering ten
places for undergraduate studies.
