As part of its year-long 10th anniversary celebration, Universiti Tunku
Abdul Rahman (UTAR) held the first UTAR International Conference on Chinese
Medicine at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 22 and 23 September 2012. At its
launching on 22 September, the conference paid tribute to the pioneering
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) grand master Professor Dr Ngeow Sze Chan
in commemorating the 10th anniversary of his passing.
In view of the emerging importance of Chinese Medicine globally as a
mainstream form of treatment, UTAR organised the conference in collaboration
with the Division of Traditional and Complementary Medicine of the Ministry
of Health, the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association, the Federation of
Chinese Physicians and the Medicine Dealers' Association of Malaysia, and
the Federation of Chinese Physicians and Acupuncturist Association of
Malaysia.
It was the first Chinese Medicine conference of international level ever
held in Malaysia. The conference served as a platform for
practitioners, scientists, researchers, academics and students of TCM from
all over the world to update themselves on the latest developments of TCM.
About 200 participants and presenters from Malaysia, Singapore, China, USA,
Hong Kong, Australia and other countries attended the conference.
Officiating the function on behalf of the Health Minister Dato' Sri Liow
Tiong Lai on 22 September, Deputy Higher Education Minister Dato' Dr Hou Kok
Chung said, "A national policy is being drafted on Traditional Chinese
Medicine to encourage established practitioners to form their own
self-regulatory bodies. These bodies will enable a system of official
recognition of member practitioners."
"The mission of this conference is to encourage international academic
exchanges and to generate greater interest and acceptance of Chinese
Medicine as a means of treatment," said UTAR President Ir Professor
Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik.
During the ceremony, Professor
Deng Tie Tao from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China greeted
the audience through video in paying tribute to his peer and a close friend,
the late Dr Ngeow. Another video was played to introduce the life of
Dr Ngeow before a bronze statue of him was unveiled.
Conference presenters included Emeritus Professor Dr Geoffrey Alan Cordell
from USA presenting on "Traditional Medicine in the 21st Century", Dr Ngeow
Yin Foh from USA on "Application of Acupuncture in a Modern Orthopaedic
Hospital in the USA", Professor Zhu Xiao Shu on "The Development and
Acceptance of Chinese Medicine in Australia", Professor Liu Xiaobin from
China on "Professor Deng Tie-Tao's Method of Application of Chinese
Medicine", Professor Patrick Loh Heng Meng from Singapore on "Eu Yan
Sang Good Agronomic Practices (EYSGAP) ? HERBS Certification Scheme", and Dr
Yang Zao from UTAR on "Causes and Treatment of Cancer in Southeast Asia
Region".
During the ceremony, UTAR exchanged three documents of Memorandum of
Understanding on collaborations with its partners. The Malaysian
Chinese Medical Association President, Mr. Cheah Kok Kay, the Medical
Welfare Centre of Malaysian Buddhist Association Kuala Lumpur/Selangor
Branch Chief Chinese physician, Mr Anthony Wong and Eaulier Medical
Technology Ltd (Hong Kong) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Luke Cheung exchanged
the documents with Prof Chuah. Present to witness was Prof Dr Cheong
Soon Keng, the Dean of UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
