"Your
library is well-stocked; it has everything," said Tung Shin Hospital
Director Sung Siew Thong during a two-hour visit together with five of his
colleagues at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at UTAR
Sungai Long Campus on 25 September 2013.
The
other delegates from Tung Shin Hospital, Kuala Lumpur were Director See Kam
Fook, Administrator Caroline Tan, Chinese Medicine Division Deputy
Superintendent Huang Ching Hui, Management Information Systems Manager Henry
Wong and Assistant Library Head Chong Chen Foong. The main purpose of
their visit was to know more about the book labelling and software system
used in the library and to visit the Centre for Research in Traditional
Chinese Medicine (CRTCM) in FMHS.
Tung
Shin Hospital was founded at Sultan Street, Kuala Lumpur in 1881 by Kapitan
Cina Yap Kwan Seng as Pooi Shin Thong when it was only providing traditional
medical care for patients. In 1894 it was converted into a not-for-profit
organisation, renamed Tung Shin Hospital and relocated to the present
address. Many buildings were added since 1917. The new block with a built-up
floor area of 180,000 square feet was operational since January 2006. It
houses the Chinese Medical Department with out-patient clinics, in-patient
ward with bed capacity of 108 beds, administration office, Tung Shin Academy
of Nursing and hostel for 250 staff members.
FMHS
Dean Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng led his faculty staff, Surgery
Department Head Prof Dato' Dr Shong Hing Kock, Medicine Department Head Prof
Dr Shelly Soo, Chinese Medicine Department Head Dr Te Kian Keong and Senior
Assistant Library Manager Girlie Gan to receive the delegates.
The
delegates were given a tour of the faculty. They visited the Clinical
Skills Unit, Multidisciplinary Unit, and Medical Museum before they were
brought to the CRTCM. There, they were briefed and shown samples of
various plant- and animal-based traditional medicines used by TCM
practitioners. They later visited the library where Gan briefed them on
library management.
"Students nowadays are fortunate as there are a lot of facilities available
to help them in their studies," said Sung at the end of the visit. He
also thanked the hosts for their hospitality throughout the visit.
