UTAR
and Taiwan Education Center in Malaysia organised a two-day study camp for
Chinese subject teachers in secondary schools on 16 and 17 November 2013 at
the Petaling Jaya Campus. The co-organisers were Selangor Education
Department, Kuala Lumpur Education Department, Persatuan Kebajikan Guru-guru
Bahasa Cina Sekolah Menengah Negeri Selangor and Kelab Panitia Bahasa Cina
Sekolah-sekolah Menengah W.P.K.L.

"It is
heartwarming to see so many passionate teachers attend this study camp
during the school holidays," said UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato Dr
Chuah Hean Teik after thanking the organisers and co-organisers at the
opening ceremony. He stated that the study camp aimed to increase the
quality of Chinese education and enhance teaching skills. "I hope the study
camp can elevate your interest in Chinese culture and help you all create
the same interests and motivation in your students." added Prof Chuah.
Before ending his speech, Prof Chuah expressed his respect to all the
teachers by acknowledging that teaching is a noble profession and teachers
are the role models to students and society.

There
were a total of four talks in the two-day event which attracted 120
participants. UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) lecturers comprising
Deputy Dean (Student Development and Industrial Training) Dr Lim Chee Men
talked about Chinese poetry; Deputy Dean (R&D and Postgraduate Programmes)
Dr Wong Wun Bin shared his fieldwork experiences on local Chinese studies;
Head of Programme (Postgraduate Programmes) Dr Tan Beng Piou elaborated on
the wisdom of I-Ching and Assistant Professor Dr Lee Kean Yau taught the art
of calligraphy.
Certificates were presented to the teacher attendees at the last day of the event.
