Three delegates of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), Taiwan, President Prof Mike Guu, Office of International Affairs Dean Dr Henry Chen and Malaysian NPUST Alumni Association President Lee Mon Peng visited UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus on 25 July 2003.

On hand to welcome them from UTAR were Vice President (Internationalisation and Academic Development) Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Vice President (R&D and Commercialisation) Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei, Faculty of Science Dean Dr Lim Tuck Meng, Faculty of Science Deputy Dean Dr Wong Hann Ling, Department of Biological Science Head Dr Teh Yok Lan, Department of Agricultural and Food Science Head Dr Ooi Ai Lin and Division of Community and International Networking Director Dr Tan Sin Leng.

"We signed a memorandum of understanding two years ago and it is time for us to work something out together," said Prof Ewe in the meeting, before he proposed further collaboration on student exchange, internship, dual master programme, student tour and inviting speaker from NUPST to UTAR for intensive courses.

"NPUST has been enjoying the reputation of being a national-park university," said Prof Guu, adding that the campus is as beautiful as a natural park as it has a countryside setting with expansive picturesque scenery and peaceful atmosphere.  He encouraged UTAR staff and students to visit the 285-hactare hillside NPUST campus which is the largest and most beautiful in Taiwan.

"The university provides students with a unique environment which is conducive for living, learning technology, personal development, and enhancing physical and mental health.  It is also an ideal place for faculty members to teach and conduct research," said Prof Guu.

"Academic staff from both universities should meet up to discuss further about the dual master programme," said Dr Chen, in response to Prof Ewe's proposal, before ending his presentation.  NPUST delegates had earlier indicated that it would be possible to offer twinning master programme in Food Science and Biological Science and Technology.  Dr Chen added that NPUST cooperates with many companies and therefore many internship opportunities would be available.
