Cancer Research Seminar 2014

UTAR Centre for Cancer Research, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) and the School of Bioscience, Drugs Discovery Cluster of Taylor’s University, jointly organised the Cancer Research Seminar 2014 on 2 and 3 September 2014 at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus.

With the theme of ‘Cancer treatment: beyond a microscopic view’, the fruitful two-day event gathered 16 speakers from the government departments, professional bodies, local and foreign universities with 41 participants including the academics, researchers, and health practitioners from various institutes.

The seminar was a platform to allow exchange of resources on the latest cancer-related research findings, possible integration of traditional and complementary (T&CM) medicine into the current medical system, and promoting networking among academics and respective industrial practitioners across the globe.

UTAR Center for Cancer Research Prof Dr Lim Yang Mooi in her welcoming address extended her gratitude to the organising committee, invited speakers, and participants for making the conference a success. Prof Lim, who was also one of the speakers in the seminar added, “The focus of this seminar is to understand the fundamental issues of cancer complications, to discuss the application of T&CM approaches in curing cancer as well as the significance of research to the future of cancer treatment technology.

The topics of the seminar included the integration of the medical system, government’s role to incorporate T&CM into the national health care system and recent updates on cancer treatment researches.

The other 15 speakers at the seminar were Dr Goh Cheng Soon from the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Division Ministry of Health Malaysia, Dr Zakiah Ismail  from the Institute of Medical Research Malaysia, Dr Nor Saleha Ibrahim Tamin from National Cancer Institute Disease Control Division, Prof Emeritus Dr Geoffrey A. Cordell from Natural Products Inc., Dr Ray Ong from Bio-Rad, Dr Teo Wei Boon from PerkinElmer, Ang Eng Loo from CLMO Technology Sdn Bhd, Ilambarthi Lokamani from Kinematic Resources Sdn Bhd, Dr Adrian Ng from the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation, Prof Dr William Cushley from University of Glasgow, Prof Dr Leong Chee Onn from the International Medical University, Prof Dr Seow Heng Fong from University Putra Malaysia, Associate Professor Dr Yang Zao from UTAR Chinese Medicine Department, Prof Victor Ng from National Yang-Ming University and Dr Looi Mee Lee from Taylor’s University.

A highlight was the one-hour post forum, chaired by Prof Dr Lim, to allow further in-depth discussion and brain-storming among the participants and speakers to generate creative ideas on advancing their cancer research.
