English Language Week

The UTAR Department of Modern Languages held its annual English Week event at UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 12 August 2015.

This event included student performances of speeches, songs, sketches, and story-telling strictly in English, as well as an award presentation for top students in their English units.

Prof. Chuah stressing the importance of English

“As Tun Mahathir said two days ago, we may be fluent in our own languages, but to compete with the world, we must be able to speak English as well. English has become the language of the world and it is important for us to learn the language in order to communicate and learn”, said Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik.

“For those who are not yet fluent, do not be afraid to use broken English in daily conversations with others, because as time pass, you will get better and better,” he added. Prof Chuah also said that being multilingual will give students an advantage in their future careers. 

Alahakone explaining the objectives of English Week

“The objective of English Week is to help students improve their English in a creative and fun manner,” said Head of Department of Modern Languages Yogesvary Alahakone. “Through this meaningful event, our students can learn and step into the corporate world with confidence,” she added.

“I’m really happy to be crowned the winner for my efforts, it’s a real motivation to do better and also I would like to thank my friends for helping me in my comedy sketch,” said Year one Bachelor of International Business Carey Yap Zun Xuan.

This event saw the participation from students across different faculties such as FAM, FES, FCI and CFS.
