Workshop on geriatric care

Participants using role-play to understand elderly needs

A workshop for on “Geriatric care: Effective communication and understanding elderly needs” was conducted at Tung Shin Hospital on 23 October 2015.

The aim of the workshop was to create an understanding of geriatrics and integrate the knowledge into nursing practice, as well as to provide opportunities to become positive contributors to society and active members in community care.

“These experiences will enhance their nursing care of senior citizens in the future. These various methods can contribute to learning experiences by stimulating interest and enjoyment,” said Tung Shin Hospital Head of nursing division Chin Yee Fong.

Two talks were delivered on healthy aging and effective communication with the elderly. In addition, group presentations and role-plays were conducted among five teams. The teams were assessed on their performance by a team of management staff from Tung Shin Hospital.

About 45 people participated, hailing from various departments including nurses from Western and Chinese medicine, nursing tutors, physiotherapists, supporting staff from the admission office of the hospital, not to mention the nursing students.

This workshop was organised by UTAR Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS).
