Guangxi Medical University Visit

With great honour, UTAR welcomed delegates from Guangxi Medical University (GMU) on 18 December 2015 at the Sungai Long Campus.

The purpose of the visit was to explore further collaborations with UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). A general discussion was held on the same day. 

Present at the discussion were GMU Party Committee Secretary Prof Qiu Xiaoqiang, the First Affiliated Hospital Director of GMU Prof Zeng Zhiyu, GMU Party Committee of Stomatological Hospital Secretary Prof Luo Ping, GMU Student Affairs Department Director Prof Li Yiang, GMU Information Centre Director Prof Tang Zhong, GMU School of International Education Lecturer Xie Li, UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik, FMHS Dean Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng, FMHS Head of Department of Medicine Prof Dr Shelly Soo, Centre for Extension Education Director Lim Guat Yen, Division of Community and International Networking Director Dr Tan Sin Leng, Student Affairs Department Head Loh Nyuk Leung,  Soft Skills Competency Department Head Fook Oi Yee, Division of Community and International Networking Senior Asst Manager Ong Yoon Furn and UTAR staff.

Prof Chuah expressed his warmest welcome and gratitude to the visitors and looks forward to more possible collaborations with GMU in the future. Prof Qiu presented GMU to the meeting and welcomed discussions to collaborate with UTAR. The areas of interest include STEM cell research, staff and student exchanges, and community projects. FMHS Prof Shelly Soo mentioned the possibility of exploring cyber classroom sessions with GMU.

In February 2015, GMU sent 10 professors to UTAR for teachers’ training under the UTAR Centre for Extension Education. The discussion included the possibility of a second training for another batch of teachers later on.

The delegates from GMU showed interest in UTAR’s New Village Projects and would like to explore further once they are back in China. The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs followed by a campus tour.
