A group of students from Lycée Francais de Kuala Lumpur (LFKL) visited UTAR
Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) on 15 January 2015 at Petaling Jaya
Campus. They were led by LFKL Mandarin Language teachers who were Anna
Coste, Julie Lau Chuen Siong and Ding Loong Loong.
The main objectives of the visit were for the students to be more familiar
with Chinese Studies at ICS, and to gain a better understanding of Chinese
culture. It is also to promote the University to the French students.
The members of ICS team who welcomed them were the Dean Dr Chong Siou Wei,
Deputy Dean (Academic Development & Undergraduate Programmes) Dr Tee Boon
Chuan, Head of Department (Chinese Studies-Klang Valley Campus) Dr Chin
Chong Foh as well as staff and lecturers.
After Dr Chin’s welcome speech and introduction of ICS members to the
visitors, there was the presentation of UTAR corporate video on the
University’s background and achievements. The students were all ears to the
informative talks by the ICS lecturer Tiong Ee Ping on ‘A New China in
Malaysia, how could that be possible?’ and Dr Chin’s presentation on
‘Chinese Malaysian Society and Culture.’
Anna Coste thanked UTAR for the warm reception. She added, “My students
begin to learn Mandarin at Year 7 as a second or third language. From this
visit to UTAR, they have learned much about the Chinese culture from the
Malaysian perspective.”
The visit ended with a lively Q&A interaction session.
