Joint ICT workshop with DSU

UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) and Dongseo University, South Korea, (DSU) jointly organised a workshop on Computer Vision, Graphics and Interactive-Arts at Perak Campus from 26 to 30 January 2015.

The objectives of the joint workshop were to encourage networking and knowledge exchanges among the participants from South Korea, China, Indonesia and Malaysia, making it a valued platform for substantive discussions on the recent technologies and knowledge updates on computer vision, image processing, visualization, graphics and Interactive Arts. This inaugural workshop hosted by UTAR saw more than 40 participants comprising students, researchers and academics.

Present at the opening ceremony were UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, FICT Dean Dr Liew Soung Yue, Chairperson Saw Seow Hui, DSU Prof Lee Byung Gook, DSU trainers, FICT lecturers, staff, participants as well as UTAR students.  

In his opening speech, Prof Ewe thanked the organisers for planning such a beneficial and interesting event. Prof Ewe said, “This workshop is a good platform for UTAR and DSU members to exchange ideas and viewpoints. The dissemination of DSU research information will help to pave the way for future project collaborations and promote the advancement of research culture at both universities.”

Prof Lee remarked, “DSU is a collaborative partner of UTAR and we are very pleased to enhance the collaboration by discussing our research topics with UTAR members. We are looking forward to the mutual benefit of exploring new concepts that arise from the joint discussions.” He also added that such an initiative would enrich the partnership and foster closer working ties between both universities.    

Trainers from DSU were postgraduate students under the supervision of Prof Lee. They were Sun Wei Heng, Huang Yi Fan, Yin Zhi Zie, Wu Rui Han, Han Yuan Dong, Fu Jia, Kurniawan Edwin, Nian Zi Xuan, Lin Yu Feng, Shen Lian Zhi and Richard Evan Sutanto.

The five-day workshop consisted of talks, demos, team building and excursion to Gua Tempurung. The topics in the workshop included the latest technologies for hardware and software, the opportunities and challenges of graphics and interactivity, the purpose and functions of various computer hardware sensor devices, programming languages, and the potential and creative solutions associated with these technologies.
