The Mind Competitions held in UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 25 July saw 800
turnouts from various schools and members of the public.
The participants are challenged on their mental literacy skills in three
different competitions. They are Category 1, Memory competition, a)
Random words, b) Random Numbers c) Dates and Events d) Random Letters of the
Alphabet; Category 2, Mind Mapping competition and Category 3, Mental
Calculation competition.
“She was very excited when she heard about the event”, said nine years old
Thanusha Premananb’s mother, Vijayah Malar. “She learns memory skills
at Kumon to improve cognition level”, her mother added.
“Memory training helps her to remember through understanding instead of
memorising”, said ten-year-old Ngow Xuan Huei’s memory teacher from Melaka,
Desmond Koh. “She is the top student in school. She also represents the
school in public speaking competitions”, he added.
“I love spending time to practise mind-mapping skills, it is very useful for
theoretical-based subjects and I teach the skills to my students too”, said
36-year-old lecturer from Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Faridah Hani.
Participants stand a chance to walk home with prizes worth a total of RM57,
000 when the results are announced online on 4 September at www.utar.edu.my/mmlm.
The annual competitions are jointly organised by the Malaysia Mental
Literacy Movement, UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College.
