A group of Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity (CITC) members
visited Datuk Romie Sigan Daniel, Resident of Betong Division, at his office
in Betong, Sarawak from 26 May to 2 June 2015 to do research for their
virtual reality project.
The project entitled, Borneo Virtual Reality (VR) Walkthrough, aims to
preserve culture via the new media. The purpose of the trip was to give the
team members an actual feel of the environment they will be creating in the
virtual world.
“At CITC, we aimed to conduct research in support of culture preservation
through the new media technology, specifically through Virtual Reality (VR)
and Augmented Reality (AR)”, said the chairperson of CITC, Aloysius Yapp.
“I’m very impressed with VR technology and CITC’s initiative in putting in
the effort to collect data for the preservation of nature”, said Datuk
Romie.
The team also managed to cover Paku, Saribas, Layar and Batang Ai areas. The
surroundings were captured in high quality photos and videos in order to
create a vast and immersive environment in VR.
CITC is one of UTAR’s research centres that focus on culture preservation
through modern communication technology.
