An event titled “1 World Civilisations @ 1 Malaysia. Maritime Silk Route”
with the theme of “The Emerging of Chinese Economy and its Impact on ASEAN:
The Challenge and Opportunity for Malaysian Economy” was held on 24 June
2015 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
The organisers of this event were Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC)
along with UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM), and Anbound
Research Center (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The talk series was aimed to broaden
students’ global prospect by understanding the realities of the
international economy.
Over 100 media guests, lecturers and students converged at the university
for the talk series
Present to welcome the invited speakers was Head of Department of
International Business Alexander Tay Guan Meng. “Economic affairs among
countries have become more inseparable due to economic globalisation,” said
Tay, adding that “students need to be sufficiently critical to identify
Malaysia’s existing economy challenges and opportunities led by China’s
rising economy.”
Tay gave a warm welcoming speech at the start of the event
The first speaker was Adam Tan, executive director of Pearl Harbour Sdn Bhd
and MCCC member, who shared his inspirational experience transforming from a
night market peddler to a successful businessman. He said, “Everyone is a
brand. Make use of your skills and be courageous to shape your future and
customise your brand.” Tan also advised the students to proactively grab
opportunities and continuously learn from failures.
The second talk was given by Mickie Teo, the founding Director of LINs
Advertising & Marketing Sdn Bhd. He emphasised the gaps and needs in the
current as well as the future market. Teo also pointed out that there is a
mismatch between the skills of today’s students and employers’ expectations.
“Students must be educated that business is not limited to tangible assets
only, they should be well-equipped with knowledge about intangible assets
too,” Teo said. He further highlighted and urged students to realise the
potential of Malaysia’s cultural uniqueness to become the most influential
catalyst of Malaysia’s economic development in the foreseeable future.
Zhang Qianye, information director (ASEAN team) in Anbound Consulting Sdn
Bhd, continued the talk series with her lively presentation. Her talk
focused on the relationships between politics and economy as well as their
influence on each other’s development. She said that, “Malaysia should
understand its stance as one of China’s partners in their economic
collaborations,” and “younger generations need to be analytical thinkers who
are aware of their country’s strengths and strive for the country’s
initiatives.”
The last speaker was Dato’ Joseph Lim, the vice president of MCCC and the
key founder of Global Green Synergy Sdn Bhd. He highlighted the significance
of transferrable technologies and skills to various industries. “It is
essential to identify one’s business’ special selling point and create one
if you do not find one,” said Dato’ Lim, adding that “a successful
development of product must undergo a ‘Four S’ process, from Synergising,
Synchronising, Simplifying to Systemising.” He ended his informative talk by
sharing his motto: To create, to share, to love.
