UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) in collaboration with the Malaysian Software Testing Board and the German Testing Board (GTB) successfully organised a software testing talk by two software testing professionals from the German Testing Board, Jorn Munzel and Horst Pohlmann, on their valuable experience and extensive knowledge on the background of the software tester profession, systematic derivation of a certification module, and software testing in project management perspectives to UTAR students and staff. The talk which was also attended by some students and staff from Quest International University and Universiti Teknologi Petronas was held on 20 October 2015 at Kampar Campus.
The three-hour talk was part of FICT’s talk series and aimed to enlighten students and staff on concepts and different techniques of software testing. Software testing is basically an investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with information about the quality of the product or service under examination.
In his opening remarks Dean of FICT Assoc Prof Dr Liew Soung Yue welcomed the participants and thanked the speakers for their great contribution to UTAR students and staff by giving this talk about their valuable knowledge and experience.
Jorn Munzel, the first speaker delivered his talk about the profession of a software tester. In his presentation, he elaborated on some current ideas on how to create a reference schema of tester roles and professions at the German Testing Board. He also provided a practice example about test team staffing, a model of professional role management, and the mapping of this model into a tester profession schema. Munzel also delivered some suggestions on how to use the reference schema to support career planning, team staffing, and tester qualifications.
Later on Horst Pohlmann, who has more than 25 years of experience in the area of Software Quality Management and Testing in Industry and Services, spoke on the systematic derivation of a certification module and the role of software testing in the perspectives of project management. He was a founding member of the GTB. Since 2009, he has been the Head of Processes, Methods and Tools at Lemfoerder Electronic GmbH, Espelkamp. He shared his expertise on software quality assurance, a means of monitoring the software engineering processes and methods used to ensure quality. He implemented his knowledge on software quality assurance at various other software houses and shared his insights on the subjects of quality and project management and business process re-engineering.
Aided by captivating power point presentations, the software tester specialists guided the perplexed audience through the highs and lows that characterised the software assurance quality. Apart from their sharing about software testing profession, the two speakers also discussed about two case studies, namely, ‘the agile approach’ and ‘the classical agile approach’. These approaches are basically used in the areas of project management and software development. The talk ended with a lively Q&A session where the audience asked a wide range of interesting questions about research and publication.
