The Grand Chinese Lectures

The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) hosted the third Grand Chinese Lecture(中华大讲堂)featuring ICS Adjunct Professor Lim Chooi Kwa at Sungai Long Campus on 26 August 2015.

Titled The Ci Poetry of Wang Anshi A reformist of Song Dynasty (宋朝革新人物王安石之词), Prof Lim said, “Ci (poems) are beautiful and I hope the younger generation will see the magical transformation of Chinese characters into ci,” adding that, “Wang Anshi is one of the greatest poets and an iconic figure of the Song Dynasty. His ci are unique and outstanding, portraying his aspirations and intelligence.”

“ICS has come a long way since its establishment as it has continuously received support from many parties,” said ICS Deputy DeanAssoc Prof Dr Tee Boon Chuan.

Aimed to promote Chinese arts, literature, culture, and to give back to the community and alumni, ICS had taken the initiative to hold The Grand Chinese Lectures on every alternate Wednesday since 29 July 2015. The speakers are Chinese Studies scholars from UTAR and other institutions invited to share their scholastic knowledge and research findings through modern interpretation.

The previous lectures were Hang Tuah's Art of War vs Guan Gong's Art of War (汉都亚兵法与关公兵法) by Dr Tee and Strategic Management Principles of Sun Zi Art of War (孙子兵法与战略管理原则) by Assoc Prof Dr Law Kian Aun from Faculty of Accountancy and Management.

ICS will hold the next Grand Lecture on 9 September 2015 from 7pm to 9pm featuring Dr Cui Yen to talk about Geographical Zoning of Han Dialects in China (中国汉语方言的分区). The Grand Chinese Lectures welcome UTAR students, staff and the public to explore more about Chinese literature and to further appreciate the essence of Chinese culture.
