UTAR Centre for Research on Non-Communicable Disease (CRNCD) conducted a
workshop on maintaining lactation among working women in conjunction with
this year’s World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) themed, “Breastfeeding and Work.
Let’s make it Work!”, held at Kajang female prison on 6 August 2015.
“The goal of celebrating WBW is to promote exclusive breastfeeding among
mothers for the first six months of life which yields tremendous health
benefits, providing critical nutrients, protection from deadly diseases,
fostering growth and development of young children,” said Department of
Nursing lecturer and workshop leader, Jayanthi Marimuthu.
Jayanthi presented an informative talk on how to sustain breastfeeding while
working. Twenty participating wardens divided into groups and were led by
committee members, Liew Siew Fun and Ng Siow Fam, who demonstrated how to
express the breast milk manually.
WBW is an annual celebration, being held every year from 1 to 7 August. It
was first celebrated in 1992 by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action
(WABA) and it is now observed in over 120 countries globally, including
Malaysia.
This programme is organized by the CRNCD as part of their community project,
which aims to improve the health of Malaysians through research, education,
and the generation of scientific knowledge and information on health.
