National Varsity Chinese Chess Tournament

The 15th National Varsity Chinese Chess Tournament (全棋15·楚汉决雄) was held for the first time in Kampar Campus on 30 and 31 July 2016. The tournament aimed to promote Chinese culture and improve the skill in Chinese chess in the country.

Jointly organised by the Malaysia Chinese Chess Association (MCCA) and UTAR’s Chinese Language Society (CLS), the annual tournament saw 72 participants assembled under one roof to compete against one another.

Invited to grace the opening ceremony was President of Perak Chinese Chess Association Puah Chun Sem. On hand to receive her were UTAR Department of Student Affairs (Kampar Campus) Head Chiang Jeng Fong representing UTAR Acting Vice-President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Lim Chee Mun representing ICS Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, CLS Advisor Wan Pui Yee, and Organising Chairperson Tan Chong Eng. The other delegates from MCCA were its Chief Arbiter Tan Koong Hean and Tournament Director Won Heng Choong.

In Tan’s opening speech, he introduced CLS and thanked MCCA for giving CLS the chance to host this annual national tournament. He said, “Our organising committee gained and learned a lot from the preparation of this tournament.”
