Drawing on his 25 years of experience in taxation, management, auditing and secretarial work, Faculty of Business and Finance Lecturer Loo Thin Tuck shared insights into the accounting world at a talk organised by the Centre for Foundation Studies (Kampar Campus) on 19 August 2016 at the Kampar Campus.

The “I am an Accountant” talk commenced with an opening speech by the Department of Management and Accountancy Head Lim Khiew Loon who said that the speaker’s knowledge will help prepare them to be excellent accountants in their future careers.

With information from Loo’s experiences, the talk presented an unparalleled opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the journey to becoming an accountant, from the tasks and duties involved to the benefits of being a professional accountant.

The speaker shared his experiences as a professional accountant, tax consultant, and Goods and Services Tax (GST) consultant, which shed light on the current developments taking place in areas such as Accounting, Auditing, Audit Exemption, Taxation, and the Companies Act 2015.

He elucidated on the technical terms involved in accounting and gave a glimpse into the various accountancy structures present in the field today. He also gave an overview of the procedures involved in setting up an accounting firm.

As participants raised concerns on an accountant’s job scope, Loo assuaged their uncertainties by clearly outlining some guidelines to being a successful tax consultant and company secretary, especially when they perform auditing, taxation and secretarial tasks. He continued by assuring participants that “the demand for accountants remains high as they are essential to supporting the economic growth of Malaysia.”

Towards the end of the talk, Loo advised participants to keep in mind qualities such as honesty, integrity and competency in accounting knowledge to stand out in the competitive employment market.

The talk then ended with a souvenir presentation by Centre for Foundation Studies (Kampar Campus) Director Tan Lee Siew to Loo.
