Start-up entrepreneurs share real-life stories

The speakers with participants at the end of the talk

Encouraging participants with their successful start-up experiences were eight speakers invited to the “Entrepreneurship: Real-Life Stories of Start-ups in Kinta Valley” talk, organised by the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) Kampar, held on 8 November 2016 at the Kampar Campus.

The speakers were Founder of Bao Today YC Nang, Founder of Hills and Cheryl Corporate Advisory Sdn Bhd Chong Choon Kian, Founder of GAFS Advisory Sdn Bhd Goo Kar Thart, Founder of EIT Solutions Leon Hei, Founder of Tadika L.E.O.W Christine Leow, Founder of NL iNNOVATIONS Lynn Marie Eunisius, Founder of Kim House Tilling and Sanitary Sdn Bhd Sam Mah, and Founder of Treze Purple Johnsen Ng.

Participants learned that despite start-ups being difficult, the right attitude and perseverance, along with hard work, humility, courage, and dedication, will certainly ensure their success in the long run. The talk also imparted advice on skills that participants could apply in their future business endeavours, which included having good communication and networking skills.

In all the success stories shared, the speakers reminded the participants to also be prepared to meet with failures. Rather than giving up, participants were encouraged to face failures with a positive attitude and to learn from those disappointments.

As UTAR is a university by the people, for the people, the talk served to remind participants to always contribute to society with their skills and talents, similar to several of the experiences shared by the speakers about serving society through their successes.

With the insightful advice given by the speakers, the talk aimed to spur the participants’ interest in setting up their own start-up businesses and also for them to gain more insights into the industry of their interest.

The speakers also co-wrote a book, titled Our Journey Begins, which not only compiles their experiences, but is also meant to encourage the younger generation to not give up easily. They generously donated 210 copies of the book to UTAR, which are now available in the UTAR libraries for students’ perusal.

The talk ended with an interactive Q&A session and a souvenir presentation by DSSC Assistant Lecturer Yoon Seck Hoe to all the speakers.
