Helping those in need

UTAR FAM students with children from United Learning Centre (ULC)

UTAR students from various faculties completed their 16-hour Community Project Co-Cu unit in various non-profit organizations (NGO) and shelter homes throughout the October trimester in 2015. The activities carried out by the students were an initiative to create awareness towards helping the underprivileged in our society.

This community project served as a stepping-stone to prepare students for work and service and to cultivate a lifelong habit of giving back to society in a way that matters to them. For many students, it was their first time as a volunteer.

FAM student Ho Kah Fong, shared that it was exciting to be a part of the children's life-changing moment.

Chong Pui Ling said, “It was a great experience conducting activities with the children. They are so welcoming and receptive. We hope that our contributions were meanigful to them.”

Students also extended their care and time to helping refugee children in the United Learning Centre (ULC), Bukit Bintang, and Global Gospel Mission (GGM), Puncak Jalil through giving them tuition classes and conducting fun learning activities.

Other beneficiaries of this project were Rumah Hope, Petaling Jaya; Home for the Angels, Sungai Long; Persatuan Kanak Kanak Istimewa, Cheras; Kiwanis, Petaling Jaya; and Lovely Disabled Home, Petaling Jaya.

This project is organized by the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC), Sungai Long Campus, under the supervision of lecturers, Chan Siew Fen, Fatimah Abdul Halim Koh and Nurulain Mohamed Salihuddin.
