Two colours – Black and White, were all that were needed to transform a
silent night into an unforgettable UTAR Ball 2016 for staff and students at
Swiss Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut, Lumut, Perak on 25 June 2016.
Held at the beach for the first time, the black-and-white themed ball was
organised by the Sungai Long Student Representative Council (SRC) of
2015/2016 and attracted over 165 participants from both Kampar and Sungai
Long Campuses. Side-stepping from the mainstream indoor balls, UTAR Ball
2016 saw the ladies dressed immaculately in white, while the men were
suavely suited up in black, allowing them to enjoy beautiful natural
scenery, make new friends and get to know people of diverse backgrounds for
a cross cultural experience.
Invited for the opening ceremony were UTAR Vice President for
Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat
representing UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato' Dr Chuah Hean Teik,
Acting Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr
Choong Chee Keong, Sungai Long Head of Department of Student Affairs Loh
Nyuk Leung, and Organising Chairperson Chai Yong Se Nian.

Chai acknowledged the support from the participants and said, “I would like
to thank everyone for taking the time off your busy schedule to join us
tonight. Without your support, this event would not have been a success.” He
also expressed gratitude to the organising members for their unfailing
efforts in seeing through the event until the end. “It was really an
emotional moment to see the ball carried out well. Reminiscing the efforts
to overcome the difficulties faced were experiential and the hard works by
only being able to imagine the entire event without being able to visit the
site so often have paid off. It was unbelievable but yet a joyous moment!”
enthused Chai.
Prof Ewe in his speech mentioned that it was the first time the UTAR Ball
was held at a beach and it was even more meaningful having the international
students as a part of the UTAR family. He hopes that such sprightly student
engagement activity will continue its good tradition in the future.
As the night progressed, participants were entertained with various
performances from singing performance by “The Fantastic 5 People” to magic
show by MRGTC Quest Academy. Other activities that trailed along were the
Student Awards presentation ceremony, Luck Draw session, and the
much-anticipated “Mr Black and Ms White” prom king and queen award ceremony.
After much excitement and anticipation, the results were finally revealed
with Kampar Campus Entrepreneurship student Chooi Kar Chun being crowned Mr
Black while Kampar Campus Advertising student Tan Ying Lu was crowned as Ms
White.
